Hume Philosophy Paper

David Hume was a mid eighteenth century thinker that is most popular for covering an assortment of hypotheses. He secured that reason alone can't be a thought process to the will, moral qualifications are not gotten from reason and good differentiations are immediate from the ethical assessments [Treatise of Human Nature, 11]. â€Å"Reason is, and should just to be the captive of the interests, and can never claim to some other office than to serve and obey them† [T 2. 3. 3 p. 414] in his work A Treatise of Human Nature.Reason alone can't persuade or restrict energy. â€Å"Reason is entirely latent and can never either forestall or deliver any activity or affection† [Book 2, 265]; moral qualifications are not gotten from reasons. Reason doesn't without anyone else comprise justification for an activity of want. Reason just â€Å"intervenes to disclose passion’s driving forces to activities proceedings† and accordingly interfacing between two components [Bo ok 3, pg. 296]. Energy can impact or even dismissal reason deliberately to serve objectives behind actions.Moral differentiations are â€Å"derived from sentiments of joy and torment and not from reason†. Reason itself â€Å"cannot deliver or forestall any activity or fondness and ethics concern actions† and expressions of love and along these lines can't be founded on reason [Book 3, pg. 301]. Because of the possibility that qualifications are not founded on reason, Hume expresses that they depend on feelings that are felt by moral sense This can be identified with the investigation of how we are persuaded to act ethically and the job of down to earth reason in moral motivation. The job of reason is just to discover which means help accomplish a given objective. Our objectives are set by what Hume calls the enthusiasm and what today is generally called wants. Reason is the â€Å"slave of passion† as in it useful explanation alone can't offer ascent to moral insp iration, yet reliant on persuasive power. Hume guarantees that â€Å"passions don't allude to outside things† [Book 3 pg. 336], yet that they are a unique presence. As such, interests are simply the very substance of the.

Maurya and Gupta Empire free essay sample

08/08/11 12:57 AM Indus valley to the Pre-British period : 1. Indus Valley 2. Maurya Dynasty 3. Gupta Empire 4. Mughal Empire 5. Mewar Dynasty 6. Vijayanagar Empire 7. Maratha Empire 8. Ahom Kingdom 9. Kushan Dynasty 10. Satavahana Dynasty I. MAURYA DYNASTY COSTUME Men and ladies kept on wearing three unstitched pieces of clothing, as in Vedic occasions. The fundamental article of clothing was the antariya of white cotton, material or bloomed muslin, in some cases weaved in gold and valuable stones. For men, it was an unstitched length of fabric hung around the hips and between the legs in the kachcha style, reaching out from the midriff to the calf or lower legs or worn much shorter by laborers and ordinary people. The antariya was made sure about at the midriff by a scarf or kayabandh, regularly tied in a circled tie at the middle front of the abdomen. The kayabandh could be basic scarf, vethaka; one with drum-headed bunch at the finishes, muraja; an extremely detailed band of weaving, level and strip formed, pattika; or a many-stringed one, kalabuka. The third thing of attire called uttariya was another length of material, normally fine cotton, infrequently silk, which was used as a long scarf to wrap the top portion of the body. uttariya was worn in a few different ways to suit the solaces of the wearer: exquisitely by those at court, who wrap it on the two shoulders or one shoulder, or corner to corner over the chest and coolly hitched at the abdomen, or it could even be worn freely over the back and bolstered by the elbows or wrist, and from numerous points of view as per the impulses of the climate. Be that as it may, for the worker and the skilled worker, it was progressively a commonsense article of clothing to be tied around the head as insurance from sun, or firmly around the abdomen leaving the hands free for work, or again as a towel to wipe the face when perspiring. Its uses were perpetual for the poor segments of the general public and for them it would be made of coarse cotton. Ladies tied their antariya in various manners. Initially misty, it later turned out to be increasingly straightforward. A straightforward little antariya or piece of material, langoti was appended to the kayabandh at the middle front, and afterward went between the legs and took care of at the back. A more extended rendition of the antariya was the knee-length one, being first folded over and made sure about at the midsection, the more drawn out end at that point creased and took care of at the front, and the shorter end at long last drawn between the legs, Kachcha style, and took care of at the abdomen at the back. Another rendition, the lehnga style, was a length of material folded over the hips firmly to shape a plain sort of skirt. This was not drawn between the legs in the kachcha style. The uttariyas of high society ladies were by and large of slim material enhanced with explained outskirts and frequently worn as a head covering. Their kayabandhs were fundamentally the same as those of the men. Moreover, they here and there wore a patka, an enhancing bit of fabric connected to the kayabandh in front by taking care of one end at the midriff. The patka was produced using plaited fleece or cotton, curved yarn or calfskin, and now and again it was additionally woven. Despite the fact that, footwear is regularly referenced in Vedic writing there is no sculptural proof for this period, with the exception of on account of warriors who wear the Persian boot. It might be on the grounds that shoes couldn't be taken inside a stupa or Buddhist sanctuary, that they were not delineated on the models on stupas. In the more remote towns and wildernesses, shepherds, trackers and individuals of comparable occupations were for the most part native or had a place with the least rank. They by and large wore straightforward unbleached coarse assortments of the cotton antariya and turbans, much equivalent to we discover today, and the act of inking was genuinely normal. The more crude clans who lived in the timberland wore pieces of clothing produced using grass (Kusa), skin, and hide. Headgear and Hairstyles Women for the most part secured their heads with the uttariya, worn straight or across, regularly shining with excellent outskirts. The hair, halfway separated, was made into a couple of plaits or in an enormous bunch at the back. The uttariya could be worn basically hanging out at the back or made sure about to the head with a headband, or with one end orchestrated in a fan at the highest point of the head. Skullcaps were now and again worn under or over the uttariya to keep it set up, or on occasion it could be beautified with a periphery or pendants. Protective caps also are viewed as headgear for phrygian ladies who presumably wore long-sleeved tunic with tight fitting pants and a phrygian top which was funnel shaped and had ear folds. In India, the Amazons wore furthermore, the crossed-at-chest belt vaikaksha, with metal clasps, shield, and blade. Ladies once in a while utilized turbans of enhanced material. As respects male headgear, in the early Maureen period there is no hint of the turban mauli, yet in the Sunga time frame we discover incredible accentuation on this type of male hat. These were surprising hats in which the hair itself was regularly contorted into an interlace alongside the turban fabric. This contorted plait was then masterminded to shape a projection at the front or the side of the head yet never at the inside top, as no one but ministers could utilize this style. Over the turban a band was some of the time used to hold it set up. Moreover, enlivening components like a jeweled ornament or a jhalar (periphery) could be connected to the turban, or one end collapsed in creases and took care of like a fan. Adornments From the models we discover there was an extravagance and bounty in the gems worn by the two people. Prior, it had an enormous quality to it and the workmanship was coarse. Somewhat later, with the Sungas, the adornments turned out to be fairly refined. In the Arthashastra credited to Kautilya, and in the figures of the period we discover references which give us that the material utilized most every now and again were gold and valuable stones like corals, rubies, sapphires, agates, and precious stones. Pearls also were utilized and dots of numerous sorts were copious including those made of glass. Certain decorations were regular to both genders, similar to hoops, accessories, armlets, arm bands and weaved belts. Stud or karnika were of three sorts a basic ring or circle called Kundala, a round plate hoop known as dehri and studs with a blossom like shape known as Karnaphul. Pieces of jewelry of two sorts were worn. A short one called Kantha which was expansive and level, generally gold, trimmed with valuable stones, and a long one, the lambanam. These chain or dot pieces of jewelry were now and then three-toseven stringed and were named after the quantity of strings of which they were created. At the focal point of each series of dots was a special necklace for warding off malevolence powers. Baju band or armlets of gold and silver globules were worn on the upper arm, and were periodically studded with valuable stones. Arm bands called Kangan, all the time made of square or round globules of gold, and luxuriously weaved material belts finished the male outfit. Ladies, furthermore, wore support called mekhala, a hip belt of multi-stringed globules, initially produced using the red seed kaksha however now made of gold and silver dabs, with shapes extending from round to square and oval. Moving young ladies included to these, chains of gold and silver to which chimes were connected. All ladies wore anklets and thumb and finger rings. The rings were plain and packed together on the center joints of the fingers. Anklets were regularly of gold in this period, however silver was increasingly normal. They could be as a straightforward ring, Kara, a thick chain, sankla, oran elaborate hover with little chimes called ghungru. There is no proof of nose-rings in the period. Brow adornments for ladies were very normal and worn beneath the splitting of the hair and at the focal point of the fore-head. These comprised of slender plate of gold or silver stepped in different examples, just as a star-formed sitara and bina. Furthermore, a little trimming called bindi. The main material proof we have of a bit of Mauryan gems is a solitary hoop found at Taxila dated second century BC which like Graeco-Roman and Etruscan Jewelry. Military Costume Sewn articles of clothing which had been utilized by the Persian fighters were now and then used for military dress by the Mauryans. This comprised of a sleeved tunic with cross lashes over the chest to convey the quiver, and a calfskin belt with blade. The lower piece of clothing was more frequently the Indian antariya as opposed to the Persian pants. The headgear was generally the turban or headband, while the Persians had worn the sharp top. The blend of remote and indigenous pieces of clothing is fascinating as it shows one of the early periods of development in the ensembles of Indians. This occurred in the colder north, where the Persian articles of clothing were increasingly appropriate, climatically and practically, if there should be an occurrence of fighters. Despite the fact that, layers of mail are referenced in the Arthshastra there is no visual proof of it in this period. Less complex EXPLANATION The Costumes of this period started to be isolated in three sections: †¢ Antariya †¢ Uttariya †¢ Kayabandh These three terms were generally being utilized. Antariya is the lower bit of article of clothing, which was comprised of white cotton or material. It was an unstitched bit of material tied around the abdomen in the kaccha style I. e. it went from between the legs and broadened upto the hips or lower leg as indicated by their occupation. Kayabandh was a band which was put to keep the Antariya set up. In present day phrasing we consider it a belt. It was given various names like kalabuka, muraja, pattika all these were tied in various way around the midriff. Uttariya hung the top portion of the body . It was generally comprised of cotton and once in a while silk and was worn from numerous points of view it was folded over either the shoulders or just on one shoulder and tied at the abdomen with a bunch. The laborer tied the Uttariya around their head so it doesn't meddle with the work they do. The Uttariya, Antariya and the Kayabandh were the three bits of unstitched articles of clothing that originated from the Vedic occasions. II. GUPTA EMPIRE

How Stress Can Lead to a Low Libido

Dealing with so many concerns can impact your sex life, exacerbating your stress by potentially causing relationship issues.   Stress Response and Low Libido When you react to stress, your body goes through a series of changes in order to prepare you to run away or stay and fight. This is known as your fight or flight response. When you experience fight or flight response, youll experience an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate while non-essential functions, like sex drive, are acutely diminished.   This response can also cause the release of hormones, such as cortisol and  epinephrine, which in high levels can cause decreased sex drive. When stress is chronic, changes in cortisol levels can impact sex hormones, decreasing your interest in sex. In addition to the physiological effects of stress, there is also a psychological aspect. Stress can cause you to have a busy, frazzled mind, and distract you from wanting sex or being present during sex. It can also impact your mood, leading to anxiety and depression, which can diminish libido in their own right. Lastly, uncontrolled stress can lead to unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking, and overeating and poor lifestyle choices like lack of self-care and exercise that can influence how you feel about yourself and interfere with a healthy sex life. If your stress response isn’t reversed, it can contribute to a condition known as chronic stress, impacting your physical health in many ways, including causing low libido.     How Stress Impacts Your Health Overcoming Stress and Low Libido Minimizing stress and maintaining a good sex life with your partner is possible, especially if you both put in time and effort. Here are a few strategies to consider. Practice Stress Management If you suspect that life stress is putting a damper on your libido, one of the first solutions you should consider is overall stress management. If you reverse your stress response using effective relaxation techniques, you won’t experience as many hormonal disturbances from chronic stress. Try some known strategies for dealing with worry or anxiety  in other areas of your life so that they wont have an impact on your sex drive. A few stress management techniques to consider include: Guided imageryMeditationProgressive muscle relaxationBreathing exerciseAromatherapyJournaling Talking with a therapist specializing in stress management can also help you discover coping techniques for your individual situation. How to Reduce the Effects of Stress on Your Life Examine Your Relationship When dealing with low libido, its also important to look at the health of your relationship. Studies show that relationship stress and conflicts  within the relationship can be a stronger factor in low libido than other types of stress. This is true for both men and women. Because men and women both say that their partner’s satisfaction impacts their own libido, a lack of interest from one partner can lead to a lack of interest for both partners.   Working through relationship difficulties is important for many reasons, and your sex drive is a big one. The first step should be to make sure you’re using communication techniques that are fair and supportive of your relationship. Try to view problems as challenges you face together rather than seeing one another as the enemy. Try to find strategies that support the needs of both partners. If you have difficulty doing this on your own, a therapist or marriage counselor can help you develop more effective relationship skills and work through some deeper issues.   How to Know If You Need Marriage Counseling Exercise Together Exercising is a great way to keep stress at bay and boost your self-esteem which, in turn, can boost your libido. If you feel like you dont get enough alone time with your partner, consider working out as a couple. A quick jog or evening walk together may  help you to feel more connected while you get those endorphins going. If your partner is willing to try yoga, practicing together may help bring new energy to the bedroom. Look for a book or video specifically dedicated to partner yoga or search your local area for classes you can try together. Practice Self-Care Its hard to feel good about having sex if you dont feel good about yourself. Practicing self-care means eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting good sleep, practicing stress management techniques, pampering yourself, enjoying time for self-reflection, and ditching harmful habits like smoking and drinking (which put your health at risk and dampen sexual desire). By taking time for a little self-care, youre taking time to build confidence and feel sexy, energetic, and more than worthy of your partners affections. How Self-Care Can Reduce Your Stress Levels Make Time for Each Other Many of us find ourselves busier than we ever thought possible. Being constantly busy means having little downtime, which can drain your energy and make sex unappealing. A busy schedule can also mean a busy mindâ€"and having a lot on your mind can make it difficult to relax and get in the mood. Packed schedules can even present difficulties in finding the time for sex or make it feel like just one more chore on your mile-long to-do list.   If a busy lifestyle is behind your stress and low libido, you may consider making a plan for intimacy or sexual experimentation. While scheduling sex may not seem like the most romantic notion, you can get creative and make it exciting. Begin flirting first thing in the morning (consider it part of your foreplay) and do your best to pick up the phone midday to let your partner know that you are looking forward to your sex date with a quick text or phone call. Adding a little music or aromatherapy can also help set the tone for relaxation and romance. Focus on Sensation Not Sex The power of touch is a pretty powerful stress reliever and doesnt have to include sex. Hold hands, make time to cuddle more (when you hug someone, the stress-busting hormone oxytocin is released), or explore each other through partner massage. Touching each other is a great way to show affection to your partner without any added pressure from the expectation of sex. Focusing on touch, rather than sex, can help you relax and find pleasure and intimacy, which can increase your desire for closeness and, ultimately, sex. How to Talk to Your Partner Stress and low libido can affect your relationship, so its important to talk about it. When talking to your partner about low libido, take extra care to avoid directing blame at yourself or your partner. The best approach is one that neither assigns low libido as  their  issue or your  issue but rather a problem you both will overcome together. This will require open and honest communication about the possible causes of your stress as well as the physical and emotional symptoms of low libido. Consider these tips for starting a healthy conversation: Let your partner know that you want to talk about your sex life and set a time and neutral place (i.e., not your bedroom) that’s comfortable for both of you.Don’t bring up the topic after sex, or when either of you is rushed or distracted.Consider doing some meditation or breathing exercises prior to your talk so youre in a calm state of mind. When youre stressed, its easy to get defensive.Be honest and open. Share your expectations, fears, desires, and concerns.Give your partner a chance to tell their side and use active listening skills like repeating back what your partner said. Do your best to validate your partners feelings with words of understanding.Ensure your conversation is balanced by asking open-ended questions along the way. For example: What do you think of all this?Know when to stop talking. If your conversation becomes too heated, its likely time to wrap it up. This may be a sign that you need a mediator such as a therapist or sex counselor to help you work throug h this. How to Have the Sex Talk With Your Partner When to Consider Therapy Communication is a crucial part of a healthy sex life, so if you and your partner are having a difficult time talking about issues with stress and low libido, therapy might be a good choice. Individual therapy may also be a good option if any negative thought patterns are contributing to your stress. Types of therapy for low libido may include: Individual cognitive therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy: Cognitive therapy for stress is based on the concept that it’s not simply the events in our lives that cause us stress, but the way we think about those events. Youll work one-on-one with a therapist to explore whats behind your stress and to define and meet your goals for better managing stress so it doesnt interfere with your sex lifeMarriage counseling or couples therapy: In couples therapy, you and your partner will work with a therapist in joint sessions. The primary goals of joint therapy are to foster open communication, recognize and resolve conflicts, strengthen your relationship, and gain a better understanding of each other.Sex therapy: Sex therapy is a specialized type of talk therapy that focuses on sexual issues. Through sex therapy, which is offered in both individual and joint partner sessions, you can learn to express your concerns clearly and better understand yours and your partners sexual needs. When considering therapy as an option, look for a therapist youre comfortable with who specializes in the type of therapy youre seeking. A cognitive therapist may encourage you to begin journaling to record the emotions youre feeling before, during, or after sex or to track the times when youre most stressed as well as what does (and does not) work to help you relax. While a sex therapist may give you homework to do as a couple such as role-playing or communication exercises. Other Causes of Low Libido If you’re still experiencing low libido after trying some lifestyle modification and working with a therapist to better manage stress, you may consider speaking to a healthcare professional about the possible medical cause of your loss of sexual interest. There are several underlying medical issues that can take the sizzle out of your sex life, including: Chronic fatigue syndromeChronic painDepressionDiabetesErectile dysfunctionFibromyalgiaHormone imbalancesPeri-menopause and menopauseRheumatoid arthritisSleep disordersThyroid diseaseVaginal drynessVaginismus If low libido and lack of interest in sex are causing significant distress and impacting your relationship or self-esteem, and its not due to medical or other psychiatric causes, you may be diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). In its latest edition, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) used by mental health professionals, split HSDD into two categories: female sexual interest/arousal disorder and male hypoactive sexual desire disorder. For a diagnosis of either disorder, symptoms must last for at least six months and cause a significant amount of distress. Symptoms of female sexual interest/arousal disorder include: Loss of spontaneous sexual desireThe inability to respond to sexual cuesThe inability to maintain interest during sexFew to no sexual thoughts or fantasiesDisinterest in initiating sex Symptoms of male hypoactive sexual desire disorder include: Few to no sexual thoughts or fantasiesA deficient or absent desire for sexual activity A Word From Verywell Its important to remember that its natural to experience fluctuations in sexual desire. But if stress is negatively impacting your sex life, dont hesitate to confide in your partner and seek help. Together, you can test out strategies to lower your stress levels and boost your sex drive. By doing so, you may even end up strengthening your relationship and improving your overall health.

Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann - 1934 Words

I believe that Baz Luhrmann has created a very effective prologue and version of Act 1 Scene 1 of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, using visual images and landmarks along with the language to aid the audience in understanding the story. Using the media throughout, Luhrmann makes the situations easier for the audience to grasp, and in turn, relate to. The film begins with the camera zooming in on a television. The prologue is spoken by a black female news reporter. Using a coloured female reporter is effective as it shows how universally important the story is. This indicates the importance of the Montagues and the Capulets for their frays and fights to shown on national television. Using the media makes the situation seem more real,†¦show more content†¦All of this suggests their apparent immaturity, and fun attitude. The Montague boys pull into Phoenix petrol station. The name Phoenix is significant as it shows that often good things are born from the ashes, in this case, Romeo and Juliets love for each other, and an end to all the fighting. As they pull in, there is a clear shot of the cars number plate, which reads ‘Mon 005. The Capulets then pull into the petrol station, in a more suave, sophisticated car; however they have a matching number plate, this time reading ‘Cap 005. This again shows competition between the two families. One of the Montague boys climbs out of the car, and shows a sexual attitude towards some nuns. This indicates that they have little respect for people. The Montague has a black eye, which shows that he has been in a recent fight, most probably with a Capulet. Abra and Tybalt then step out of their car. Immediately there is an obvious difference in the two families, and their attitudes. The Capulets are more sophisticated, whereas the Montagues are immature and up for anything. As soon as the Montagues spot the Capulets, there is tension between them. The Expansion of the NFL Generations Free Essays

The National Football League (NFL) has changed over time during its existence from 1920. The National Football League’s experience is even more exciting today then in past generations. The players today are bigger, faster, and stronger then professional players. We will write a custom essay sample on The Expansion of the NFL Generations or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although the same general rules still apply in today’s game, but new ones are brought up every year to protect players from injuries. Ever since the league started in 1920, the football equipment for players has improved even better over the years. Also today’s football culture is even more exciting for players and fans to enjoy. For the players today, it is easier to promote themselves and their teams from the Internet and social media. Since the arrival of the NFL, it has improved over the years and the now fans have made it a way in their daily life. The NFL experience improves every year and it is easier for players to promote themselves because of the Internet. Currently, every player joined the NFL because of the Internet. Today, it is easier for players to promote themselves and communicate with coaches or teams because of the Internet. Coaches and team management are always on the look out for great players. After their talent search, the NFL teams scout online using college statistics for their prospect using the college athletics websites from the players school. The NFL coaches today can even watch college player’s highlight films on YouTube, which is a great way to promote players. The older generation coaches had to use word of mouth communications to scout players. Unlike past generations, the communication for players and coaches have involved extremely because of advance technology. The NFL generation today is better than past generations and is getting outstanding players to join the league because of the Internet. The NFL players today are paid more money because of their experience, talents, and abilities to play the game. The players who usually get paid the most are the franchise players. The franchise players (best players on their team) are treated more valuable and the teams base their game strategies because of talents of those players. While other players are part of a role in the game plan, the franchise players carry most the load to the game plan. The NFL players today can easily be replaced by other upcoming college standouts. Unlike past generations, the competition is even more difficult to play against today because the players want to stay in the league or not be traded to other teams. The NFL continues to improve year after year because of the great competitors that join the league and the current players that do not want to be replaced. The rules and regulations of the NFL games have changed significantly and the way the game is watched on television. Most of the rules that changed were for health and injury risk issues because of the full contact sport. For instance, the most recent rule that changed was the head-to-head contact tackle. The head-to-head contact tackle is the incorrect way to tackle, but sometimes other players just want to injury other players for their own reasons. This highlight tackle has been banned due to injuries like brain damage, neck injuries, and concussions. If players attempted to do this tackle they will be fined or suspend for an certain amount of games. Just like any other violation tackle, the head-to-head contact tackle is absorbed in the NFL very closely. While, football equipment has improved over the years for safety issues. There are lighter safety pads that protect your bones with more comfort to your body when absorbed contact. The NFL is always improving the football equipment and trying to avoid past life-threatening injuries such as concussions. Others new rules were also created to improve how the game is played and will protect the football players even better today. The games on television have better picture and a greater experience to watch the game. Unlike in the past, there is a huge difference how the picture has improved even more. The NFL games today have more camera angles and closer experience to watch the game. Just imaging and compared how older generations watched the games on black and white televisions? Also, the NFL games are now watched in high definition. There are also now NFL games that can be watched in 3-Dimensional. Unlike basic cable games, the 3-D games change the television experience, they make you feel like you are playing or coaching in the game. The way the game is played and watched on television in today’s generation, is extremely better than past generations. Also the American football culture is expanding and growing over the years of existence. During the fall season, fans know Sundays are for NFL football games and church. NFL fans exist through out America; there can be New York fans that live in California or other areas. The fans are expanding everyday and the football culture is now a way of people’s life. For example, NFL fans treat Super Bowl Sunday as a holiday than a regular championship football game. Everybody watches the Super Bowl for the game, halftime show, and commercials. NFL fans have parties and invite friends over to watch the big game at their house. Even commercials during the Super Bowl are always talked about because everybody watches the Super Bowl. Although, companies pay millions of dollars for thirty seconds for their commercials to be played during the Super Bowl because they can attract new customers. Even stores get involved to promote Super Bowl Sunday; like having sales on food and televisions. However, the Thanksgiving Thursday Night Football Game is also part of the American football culture. While enjoying time with family on a real holiday, the NFL has a game on Thanksgiving Day. This game always promotes the Super Bowl game because they know fans and their families are watching the game. The football culture has grown bigger through every generation. Everybody knows when it’s time for Super Bowl Sunday. The NFL experience has improved over the years and players have been improving each year. My favorite player of all time in the NFL is Ray Lewis, he plays defensive linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens. Ray Lewis is a franchise player for the Baltimore Ravens and is entering his sixteenth year in the NFL because of his effort to be the best he can be. While, I play the same position as Ray Lewis and I try to put in the same effort he does to become a great player. Although I am trying to pursue an NFL career and become a legend just like Ray Lewis it takes hard work and dedication to become the best you can be. My favorite motivation quote from Ray Lewis is â€Å"You might be bigger, faster, stronger, and better than me, but you are not going to outwork me, because I won’t let you†. Unlike other players, Ray Lewis is great role model to play the game and he continues to play the game with his heart instead of greed. The National Football League has changed significantly in every generation. The players are more skilled, paid more money, and rules have changed due to past injuries. The players today are bigger, faster, and stronger than past players because of the improvements in the games. Even the technology of watching the game on televisions has improved significantly for fans to enjoy. Today, the NFL culture has grown on every American life including mine. The National Football League will keep changing generation after generation, but the love of the game will continue to grow. How to cite The Expansion of the NFL Generations, Essay examples

Is Professional Wrestling A Sport Essays - Masked Wrestlers

Is Professional Wrestling a Sport? Imagine thousands of screaming fans waiting for the popular television show WWF Monday Night Raw to begin. Elaborate firework displays go off and loud music plays all to enhance the audience's excitement. This is professional wrestling, one of the hottest things on TV today. It is one of the highest rated programs on television each week. With all the attention wrestling is receiving today, a great debate has ensued. Many people argue that pro-wrestling is not a sport and that anyone can become a profession wrestler. They believe it is not physically demanding and they are not hurting each other; it is completely fake. By many, wrestling is considered nothing more than a fancy show with talented actors. Professional wrestling is deemed by many people to be a "male soap opera." So the question arises, should professional wrestling be considered a real sport? A sport is defined as any activity where competition is involved. Whether it involves a one on one confrontation or teams, it is a sport. A sport also normally contains great physical exertion among the athletes in which they must train for a long time in order to aquifer a skill. Another quality of a sport is the desire amongst all athletes to be the best. Professional sports are also about pleasing the fans because without the fans there would be no pro-sports. A final thing about professional sports has to do with travel and frequency of competition. Many pro sports require their athletes to travel and perform very frequently. These ideas are what sports are all about. Now take professional wrestling as a sport. The wrestlers definitely are athletes that aquifer a skill in order to wrestle. Wrestlers also very often square off in fierce one on one battles or sometimes they pair off in tag teams. The greatest of all reasons why pro-wrestling is a sport though is the great physical exertion that must endure in the course of a match. The amount of physical pain goes through in a match is immense. The matches are truly exhausting to the wrestler. Matches normally last from ten to fifteen minutes but may go upwards of a half-hour. During the match there are no breaks, the wrestlers are constantly hitting each other and performing moves like piledrivers and suplexes. Wrestlers even sometimes leave the ring and this is where their true stamina and strength come in. Many weapons are used like chairs, ladders, and even tables. The power of the hits from these weapons even sometimes causes the wrestlers to bleed. Many people believe this blood is fake, but it is almost always real and the wrestlers must continue their matches through it. Next, the wrestlers sometimes proceed into the audience. This is especially dangerous because the wrestlers have to do deal with their opponents as well as drunken fans screaming and hitting them. This is just a typical day in the life of a pro-wrestler. If still uncertain if professional wrestlers pain and injuries during the course of a match, watch the wrestler Mankind. Mankind is a former World Wrestling Federation (WWF) champion and is often dubbed "hardcore," meaning he experiences no pain. He takes more punishment than perhaps any pro-wreslter in history. Take for example, a match he had this past June. It was against a very powerful competitor, the Undertaker. The match began on top of an eighteen-foot high cage. A few moments later Mankind was thrown off the cage and crashed through a table. It looked like the match was over, but Mankind miraculously got up and continued by climbing the cage again. Next, he was thrown through the cage and landed on his back in the middle of the ring. Mankind then somehow got up again and even managed to fight the Undertaker for about fifteen minutes. Finally, the match ended when Mankind was pinned after being slammed into about five hundred thumbtacks. During this match Mankind lost three t eeth, broke two ribs, and punctured a kidney. Only a real athlete with great stamina could pull of such amazing feats. For a person to begin their wrestling career they must first go to a special wrestling school. Here they go through intense training and

Career success will no longer depend solely on the level of education but on the additional qualities of the person.

Relection of critical incident analaysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Relection of critical incident analaysis - Essay Example This allows the reflective nurse to look at the exercise and understand what they need to alter in the future, and how they would mature their practice. Thus, Gibbs model gives a practitioner to mentor his/her routine job at each and every level and with an ease as described by the Oxford University Brookes, 2011. To reflect upon this particular incident, it’s helped me to rationalize my approach in the future matters. In the capacity of being a human, everybody commits mistakes. Learning from mistakes is the better way to improve oneself. Reflection upon past experiences provides one with an opportunity to see where one went wrong so that the unfavorable consequences would not have to be faced ever again (Lewis, 2011). The practice increased my work experience along with the knowledge which helped me gain allot in the future. Likewise, it helped me enhance my nursing competencies at a whole new level. The goal of conducting this reflection for me is to improve my therapeutic relationship with patients being a nurse. Therapeutic relationship with patients is controlled by a nurse’s interpersonal skills. Both verbal and body language play a role in it. I hereby choose to reflect upon my experience with Mr. X who suffers from brain tumor. In those days, I was placed in the surgical ward for two weeks in the third semester. One day, all patients moved towards the cafeteria for lunch except for Mr. X. who was lost in some thoughts. I approached him, and asked his permission to help him. He could not understand my language because he had a different language. At that moment, I felt the uneasiness about my situation, I wasn’t in a good mood either, but as it was my duty I had to be patient and at the best of my behavior. Here, the fourth stage of Gibbs reflective model helped me solve the issue and I used eating gestures to deliver my message. As affirmed by Hill and Howlett (2005), an individual should work out the most rational option

The halo effect in persuasion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The halo effect in persuasion - Essay Example Robert Cialdini (psychology professor) suggested six principles of persuasion. These are principle of reciprocation, principle of scarcity, principle of authority, principle of commitment and consistency, principle of consensus, and the principle of liking. In this report, however, only principle of reciprocation will be discussed. According to Cialdini (2006) such a principle can be clearly seen in each of the human cultures. Principle of reciprocation requires that a person repays what another person has provided. In other words, it is like doing a favor while expecting them to return it at a later stage. The second way by which the Rule of Reciprocity may allow for a rise in the compliance makes use of a slight variation on the actual subject: rather than to provide a favor initially which would lead to a stimulation of a returned favor, a person might rather decided on a first concession which would result in a return concession. There is a certain compliance process that is called the â€Å"reject-then-retreat-technique†, or â€Å"door-in-the-face-technique†, has a major dependence upon the stress of reciprocating concessions. Through initiating with a major favor of which there is a major probability of rejection, the requester can later beneficially back away with a smaller request, which is the one that was needed since the beginning. There is a probability of such a request being accepted since seemingly it is a concession. I applied principle of reciprocation on two people. One was a friend, while other was a stranger. This helped me find whether the other person returned favor only because he was a friend and/or just being nice, or was it the principle of reciprocation. I applied both, rule of reciprocation and the reject-then-retreat technique. The rule of reciprocation failed to work with my friend,

Films Today :: essays research papers

The British tabloid press is famous for jumping on any bandwagon that supports popular opinion. Before her death the Princess of Wales was hounded on a daily basis for nearly two decades by the paparazzi to feed the insatiable appetite of the word for her picture. This lead, putting conspiracy theories aside, directly to her death. Now these very same newspapers are feeding the publics bottomless pit of an appetite with stories of her life and loves. A day never goes by with out some mention of her charity work, her past lovers and even the dresses she wore when on royal duties. Top: British tabloid newspaper The Sun which campaigned to have all video nasties banned for the sake of our children. Right: A graphic scene from Don Coscarelli's Phantasm. The only bandwagon that comes close to matching that of the Princess of Wales is the effect that films, video films in particular, have on the viewing public. When The Omen was shown on British television in the early '80s reports came in that people had to seek spiritual guidance in order for them to come to terms with the images they had seen on the screen. Some even reported that knives and forks had somehow become bent and twisted as if overtaken by evil forces. Had their cutlery really become possessed by the devil or were they attention seekers trying to get their fifteen minutes of fame? The newspapers were quick to latch on and appointed themselves as our guardians against the vile influx of film and video. Films were blamed for all of our faults, it wasn't his fault if a man raped a woman because he was following what he had seen in a video, and it wasn't their fault if children used foul language because they had heard it in a film. But I have to keep asking myself one question; isn't it about time that we took the responsibilities for our actions? If a man, or woman, commit a crime then it is not the fault of some Hollywood filmmaker but the responsibility of the said individual. We all like someone to blame. The worlds pollution is the fault of the motorist so lets tax them out of existence, the fact that little Johnny bunks off school and can't read or write is the fault of the teachers, or the government, but never the parents who don't know how to control their own children. Isn't it about time that we stopped passing the buck and admitted that WE are to blame when WE do something wrong.

Positive Effects On Social Media Essay

I believe that their is a postitive affect in social media because it builds up confidence and allows people to stay organized and in the loop. It has been around since the 80’s. In an interesting DM article apparently 30 million of us who use the internet visit social networking websites such as Myspace, Facebook, and Bebo. Social media can also help find a missing person. The first reason social media has helped is because it lets you stay in touch with friends and family. You can get to know other students at your school or stay connected with other people who share a common interest. It also helps strengthen long distance relationships. For example, I have a friend whose parents got divorced and his dad lives far away from him. He said, â€Å"The only way we can communicate is through facebook†. I personally think facebook is a neat website that can help with communication. In the article â€Å"Teens in Survey Paint Positive Picture of Effect of Social Media on Their lives† I read that â€Å"Half of teens said social networks have helped their friendship† and I also agree with this. The second reason that it has helped is that it keeps us up to date with what’s going on. A reporter from a social media article stated that â€Å"Many teens express an almost-like wearness with the pressures of constant texting and posting involved in their lives†. People post and text online to express themselves. I talked to my sister this morning, and asked her how social media has helped her in life and she said â€Å"It provides me reminders for meets or practices for cross country†. I thought that was really intersting and I also believe it helps teachers with things like that too. Since theyre always busy and forget things I think they need some kind of reminder to remind them. see more:cause and effect of social media Finally, the third reason that social media has helped is that it makes you feel less lonely or if you’re not having a good day talking to your friends online can change your mood for the day. In the same social media article it said, â€Å"Many teenagers say that using social networking sites makes them feel more confident, popular, out going, and sympathetic to others†. So this is why social media is helpful for your life and others. Most parents I know and some teachers think social media has a negative perspective on it thinking it’s just a waste of time. But in cases like having communication with far away relatives, getting reminders or just by expressing yourself can bring a postive effort in your life style.

Alice in Wonderland Literary Analysis Essay - 1690 Words

Alice In Wonderland Literary Analysis Many themes are explored when reading Lewis Carrol’s, Alice in Wonderland. Themes of childhood innocence, child abuse, dream, and others. Reading the story, it was quite clear to see one particular theme portrayed through out the book: child to adult progression. Alice in Wonderland is full of experiences that lead Alice to becoming more of herself and that help her grow up. It’s a story of trial, confusion, understanding, and success. And more confusion. Though others might argue that the story was distinctly made for children just to get joy out of funny words, and odd circumstances, the tale has obvious dynamics that confirm the fact of it being a coming of age story. Each encounter with the†¦show more content†¦Alice following the rabbit down the hole shows the curiosity she, like most other children, has. She follows the rabbit throughout Wonderland, almost as if it’s a guide. The rabbit can also be seen as an o lder figure in Alice’s life that sparks the curiosity into adulthood for her. Alice sees something intriguing in that person and their being older that gets her curious as to what it might be, just as a talking rabbit might spring her interest. She looks up to them and wants to have the qualities they do. Alice follows the rabbit as she would this person to quench her curiosity and see exactly what is going on in this part of life that Alice is so far naive to. Understanding there’s been a change in her body, Alice questions the probability that she might not be herself any longer. She believes she may have become someone else through the transformation, another typical child theory when growing up. If your appearance has changed, it may be likely that you’re not who you used to be, so of course, you must be someone else. This is also portrayed in the instance when she meets the Caterpillar. When asked, â€Å"Who are you?† by the Caterpillar, Alice honest ly answers, â€Å"I hardly know†. The Caterpillar represents Alice as well, as it will also transform into something greater as it ages. Arguments of Supporters for the Use of Plastic Bags and Why They Need to Be Banned in California Free Essay Example, 3500 words

Plastic bags are a killer of marine life as well as other ecological species live forms. For instance, in California alone, about 123,000 tones of plastic bags each year make its way to the ocean making the weight of trash to about 100 million tons over the years and this has outweighed planktons (Environment California). These bags are very dangerous to organisms living in water bodies more especially mammalian animals. These animals will tend to see plastic bags as a meal due to their texture, size, and shape. Once ingested, these bags can cause either suffocation or even indigestion by blocking the digestive tract of these animals, which will lead to eventual death. A good instance is the situation of 2010 in Seattle where a near-adult gray whale died on the beach but it was previously in good health. Scientists assigned to examine the body found about 20 plastic bags in its digestive tract. This was the fifth one of its kind to die (Hibbard). It is very rare for an animal to sur vive after ingesting plastic bags. It can either suffocate and die instantly or stay longer and die slowly due to toxic accumulation caused by blockage of intestines. Market Segmentation of Coca Cola Free Essays

string(29) " as their related drawbacks\." Business communications In this assignment I will be talking about the types of information used in Tesco. A I will start by defining information. Information is defined as the knowledge of specific events or situations that have been gathered or received by communication, intelligence or news. We will write a custom essay sample on Market Segmentation of Coca Cola or any similar topic only for you Order Now The first type of information I will talk about is verbal. Verbal communication is part of the day to day activities of Tesco. VERBAL: verbal communication entails the face to face expression of views and ideas or sometimes across the telephone. In Tesco verbal information is obtained from both managers and employees as they both work together and need to be aware of certain pieces of information that are related to either their business or job role as a whole. An example of verbal information is a store manager giving instruction to a grocery staff as to how to arrange promotion stocks on the shelves. This is a practical example of verbal information because the staff initially did not know how to go about the arrangement but he obtained it from the face to face interaction with the store manager. Verbal information is internal because it is obtained from employees and other staff inside the business. In Tesco verbal information is used to invite support for activities because the support must come from the employees in the business. For example, if Tesco need more staff for their night shift, they speak to couple of staff who work in the day to seek for their help. The purpose of verbal information is to elaborate more on key issues which are vital to the business because for example, issues like getting staff to do overtime needs to be verbal as the company is trying to persuade staff to do extra work for them. WRITTEN: Written communication involves any type of interaction that makes use of the written word. It is one of the two main types of communication, along with oral or spoken communication. Written communication is very common in Tesco, so it is will be the interest of the business for managers to develop effective written communication skills. Some of the various forms of written communication that are used internally for business operations include memos, reports, bulletins, job descriptions, employee manuals, and electronic mail. Written information also sometimes the form of diagrams, graphs and charts. For example Tesco always gives out pay slips to employees every month which contains their monthly salary and other deductions. This is written information which gives both managers and employees in Tesco the gist about how much they were paid. Written information can be said to be an internal source of information in Tesco because the Human Resource department comes out with written internal job vacancies as well as the job description to get interested applicants. Tesco uses written information for the purpose of informing the management and the staff about future developments. For example if they want to expand, they will write to workers and tell them what they expect from them to help the business expansion. ON SCREEN: This is where information may be produced on-screen. This can be seen in multimedia TVs and CD-ROM’s that combine text, graphics, animation, audio and video. Tesco uses on screen information during induction of new recruits into the business. The new recruits watch video of how to use equipment such as flat tops, cages etc. as well as to stay safe in case of fire outbreak etc. also the information used by the Checkout Assistants in Tesco are also on screen . n screen information used by Tesco is internal because the on screen information used by the Checkout Assistants are provided by the Price Integrity department to inform the workers about current prices of stock and the video they show in the induction is also acted and recorded by the Tesco employees. The purpose of the on screen information is to invite support for activities because Tesco have set their own standards in the business and through onscreen information; they are able to show it to other people who are not aware of these standards in relation to price, health and safety etc. MULTIMEDIA: multimedia means multiple forms of media. Media can be text, graphics, video, data etc. Tesco always do their advertisement on the Television and also in the newspaper and that is a form of multimedia information. This type of information is external because the Tesco advertisement ids designed and presented by someone who is not part of the organisation. The purpose of using multimedia information is to communicate sales promotions. Tesco uses variety of information to communicate their sales promotion to customers. For example they place information about their Groceries, food and other products on offer in the newspaper or on the television to target a lot of customers. WEB BASED: web based are basically information found on a website. Tesco as a business have a business website to supplement the stores they have. Customers can also buy products and services from the website. The web based information is internal because it is a provided database by the company. The purpose of Tesco web base information is to update knowledge of their own market such as the performance of the business in recent and previous years. Also in the case of recruiting staff, Tesco upload the person specification and job description of the related vacancy on their website so that applicants can update themselves with the information on the website before applying. Task 2 Businesses use different kinds of information for their day to day activities. The information they use gives them a lot of merit as it contributes to effective communication and the smooth running of the business. In this part of the assignment I will analyse the different types of information used by Tesco and the reason why they use such information as well as their related drawbacks. You read "Market Segmentation of Coca Cola" in category "Essay examples" Verbal In Tesco, verbal information is via the mouth. It includes managers and employees conversing with each other. In other words it also entails a telephone conversation between Customer Service staff and customers who wants to make an enquiry or at times customers who want to locate certain products at the shop floor. Tesco uses verbal information because it is from a reliable sourcing which from either the management or the employees and hence they can rely on it. There is high level of understanding and transparency. Tesco as a business embark on a lot of discussions as they have to deal with catalogue of duties in the shop and also work together as a team. Teamwork will enable them get the job done and this cannot be possible without verbal information. For example if the Stock Control Department of Tesco wants to embark on stock counts, the manager of the department will have to speak to the staffs of that department to give them all the necessary gist about the job and how it can be done. In this case there is flexibility and that is another benefit that is why Tesco use verbal information because the staff of the stock control department will also give the manager feedback about what they think and this will help the department and the entire Tesco team to get their job done. Tesco also use verbal information in problem resolution. Sometimes there are certain disputes, disagreements and conflicts between staffs, staff and customers etc. and this can be put to an end by talking over them. For example Tesco has an administrative team known as Listen and Fix; they resolve problems amicably through verbal information. It’s easier to communicate verbally than any other way because you get to understand every detail that is being spoken by the other person. In Tesco customers communicate with the staff members this is an advantage because they get to ask questions if they don’t understand the instructions clearly. As discussed above, there are a lot of benefits associated with verbal communication that is why Tesco use it to enable them solve problems and to achieve their stated aims and objects. Verbal communication is time saving for Tesco as far as daily interaction is concerned, in contrast, in case Tesco have a management meeting or an annual meeting, it consumes a lot of time and that is a drawback of verbal communication as it entails a lot of speeches. Also under this meeting, there are sometimes misunderstanding as they embark on a lot of debates making it difficult to arrive at a conclusion and sometimes information from the management in the course are not clear as they do not follow any formal procedure but just talking over them. Besides, verbal information has a short period of longevity making it difficult for receivers to recollect what was discussed. For example, if a customer comes up to a customer assistant in the shop floor to address a complain, the customer assistant will promise the customer to forward the issue to the management but it can occur that he might not recollect the information and hence the complaint will not be dealt with. Written Written communication has great significance in Tesco business. It is an innovative activity of the mind. Effective written communication is essential for preparing worthy promotional materials for Tesco’s development. Written information is more unique and formal. Effective writing involves careful choice of words, their organization in correct order in sentences formation as well as cohesive composition of sentences. Written information helps in laying down apparent principles, policies and rules for the running of Tesco business. Tesco as the number one retailer in the UK always set high principles and policies to enable them be on top, and all these principles are passed on through the entire staff through written information because it is more formal and precise. For example, last Tesco came up with a policy to enable them control the amount of stock lose in their various shops by doing an unannounced staff search. Tesco got their message across to the staff in the store through written information because that was formal and it breaks down every detail of the policy to the staffs. Also in the case of recruitment, Tesco written information to delegate responsibilities to new employees into the business because talking through responsibilities is not adequate and both Personnel manager and the employee might forget what is said but written information in the form of employment contract is proper for record keeping. Written information adds up to Tesco cost of production as written information entails purchasing huge sums of stationary talk less of the manpower employed in writing and delivering letters. The feedback of written information is not spontaneous making it hard for communication in Tesco to be effective. Communication needs quick and effective responds to be effective and further helps in the decision making process of Tesco. For example, Tesco relies heavily on their suppliers because they bring in their stock on daily basis. If Tesco runs out of stock, they quickly scan the information of the products and send them quickly via email to their suppliers. In this case the suppliers are meant to respond quickly to the email. The suppliers sometimes take time to respond to the email thereby making the written communication ineffective. Tesco usually sends out emails and letters to their valued customers to inform them about their already existing special offers or impending ones. This information can easily be read and understood by most customers but sometimes customers from other countries who do not understand the English language may not understand the information and may regard it as useless. When this happens, Tesco marketing strategies will not achieve maximum results because some customers do not get the whole point of the written sales promotion send to them. On screen On screen is an advantage to Tesco because a large number of people can watch the presentation for example electronic paying tills they can get information if the tills are not working or if there is any discounts or and new system introduced by the organisation. Another advantage of onscreen information is that a large number of people can access information from it to help them upgrade their knowledge in an organisation. The government has influenced a lot of businesses to keep up with health and safety at their workplace to ensure the wellbeing of their workers and customers. Tesco usually show health and safety videos on screen to their workers. The video covers issues like how to react in case of fire outbreak, how to use Tesco equipment like cages, flat tops etc. the idea behind this video is to educate the workers on how to stay positive in the work place. The video is shown onscreen to a large number of workers at a go making it easier to educate mass group of people in less time. Also the managers of Tesco do a monthly conference meeting with the Managing Director of the entire Tesco Company via the screen which really relieves the company the cost of arranging meetings because they can have a discussion with the manager without inviting him over. However the disadvantage of this type of communication is that people with disabilities like blind people won’t be able to communicate using this method. I made mentioned that Tesco’s cost is reduced because they can have a meeting with their Managing Director without inviting him over. However the disadvantage towards the onscreen meeting is that in case of technical failures like inability to connect equipment, the meeting will be affected or might not come on at all. In other words, the Managing Director can monopolize the decisions to be made under the meeting because it is not a face to face meeting to enhance free social interaction and influence of certain decisions under the meeting. Tesco self-service is onscreen which gives information to customers on better ways to pay for the items they have purchased in store without joining the long queues at the checkout however there is a disadvantage towards this form of communication because the information is written in English Language and customers who do not understand the language cannot follow the steps listed on the self-service machine. Multimedia Tesco fancy multimedia as it is able to help them target their target audience with their special offers . ultimedia can be television, audio, video, newspapers, billboards etc. for example billboards are good for communicating because they are situated in busy places. Tesco normally show their best selling items on their billboards to attract or inform passing drivers and other customers about their special offers in store. Besides, Tesco’s advertisement are mostly done on the television because most customers watch television at their work places, homes etc. s o the advertisement can be seen by customers to know what is going on in the business. To Tesco, multimedia is more appealing over traditional advertising methods. For example in the olden days, businesses use word of mouth as an effective advertising tool to tell customers about their businesses and the products or services. That was really time consuming and in other words targeted few audiences. Tesco by using multimedia like Television, Newspapers and Radio stations are able to inform the customers and the entire public about their recent or impending sales promotions. However competitive businesses in the retail sector such as ASDA, Sainsbury etc. ses multimedia in their operations hence it makes it difficult for customers to understand the positioning of Tesco’s products. Tesco incur a lot of costs by advertising through the media such as radio stations and television channels, besides advertising through the media to win the target audience attention requires strategic planning to make it effective. For example if Tesco is advertising a product to target students on the television, they will have to have to do it in the evening as students are most of the time available in the evening. Another disadvantage of multimedia information is that it is not only expensive but also advertisement through some media formats has short life. For example, Tesco advert will only be current in a newspaper throughout a day or two and afterwards becomes history. This makes multimedia information less effective. Web based The internet is used to allow people to shop from home at any time on their computers using Tesco online. They simply connect to the internet and then send the order. Websites are used to store lots of information for customers, for example, latest CDs sold in Tesco. Wines, information on a baby and toddler club etc. Club-cards are a form of internal communication because Tesco stores every item that you have bought when your card is swiped; this means that they know what have been selling the most and the least in the store. Besides, the most obvious advantage of web based information is the potential for reaching a wider audience. The internet is used by literally millions of people; all of them are looking for something to buy. Tesco having a website enables them to operate over a wider area meaning they can now get in touch with their unreachable customers. With web based information customers can easily access information about Tesco. They can see what products or services they sell, their prices, location and much more. The advantage here is that whatever Tesco decides to tell customers, they can find it with a few clicks of a mouse. Frequent system breakdown makes Tesco web based information inaccessible for both customers and Tesco. Customers will be frustrated if they cannot access Tesco website or find it difficult to find other information and they will resort to other business website. This will really bring down Tesco’s reputation and sales as well. The security issue on Business web can be a disadvantage because it can be vulnerable to hackers who can use deviant means to shop online or in other words use someone’s credit card to purchase stuff online which can create customers and business problems. Task 3 In this final task, I will be evaluating the appropriateness of business information used to make strategic decisions in Tesco. I will write this in relation to two functional areas in Tesco namely Finance Department and Marketing Department. Strategic decision is defined as the grand direction of the business. That is to say they are decisions which the business makes in relation to where they want to be in the future. The finance department of Tesco generates a variety of financial information that is helpful in decision making, including: Profit and Loss accounts providing details of whether Tesco is making efficient use of financial resources. Sales and purchases information setting out particular types of trading and accounts with particular customers and suppliers. A budget serves as a plan for the future development of Tesco. Managers are able to monitor budgets in order to spot variances and make on going adjustments to plans. Financial statements such as the profit and loss account and the balance sheet provide information about past performance of Tesco. Finance department are able to compare the performance of the business in one accounting period to the other. For example, on the 25 of February, Tesco were able to compare their profit and total fixed assets through the information in the profit and loss account as well as the balance sheet of the business. In 2011, the annual turnover of Tesco was ? 60455. 0m and a profit of ? 2777. 0m the total fixed asset was 35167. 0. In 2012, the turnover is ? 64539. 0m and the profit is ? 2956. 0m. The total fixed asset is 379180. Tesco was able to track the business as successful through their balance and profit account because the turnover and total fixed assets in the year 2012 is greater than that of 2011. This was brought to their notice through the information they recorded in their accounts. The finance department of Tesco can now make a basic forecast by following the trend of their turnover and profit/loss accounts to help them in the effective allocation of money. The balance sheet information helps Tesco’s strategic decision because the balance sheet summarizes Tesco’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific point in time which can attract investors to invest in the business to increase the revenue of the business. Investors can analyse the performance of Tesco by looking at the balance sheet to see how much Tesco owes and owns. In contrast the information used by the finance department of Tesco in the profit and loss account and balance sheet can be manipulated and this makes the information not accurate or reliable for making financial judgements. Tesco as a PLC prepare financial statements for their external stakeholders, like creditors and shareholders, and for external auditors. Unfortunately, it is simple enough for the company to manipulate the statements. The management of Tesco may choose to overinflate profits to lure prospective shareholders into investing in the company. Also care must be taken when using financial documents such as profit and loss account. This is because the financial information is not current since it was prepared years back and Tesco cannot really rely on it to make decisions in terms of the success and failure of the company at present time. It is obvious that profit and loss as well as balance sheet of Tesco can be manipulated however it can be suggested that the profit and loss account really help Tesco to make strategic decisions such as investing in profitable ventures to boast the profit margin of the company. For example, The Tesco website, in which it has invested heavily in during recent years, saw profits leap by 21 per cent to ? 48 million, on the back of an almost equal percentage sales rise. Online grocery orders lifted by 10 per cent to ? 7. 5 million. The marketing department of Tesco on the other hand uses information from the Tesco club card to make decisions such as positioning of certain products. It has been able to use the Club card very effectively in addressing different customer segments and in attracting and retaining customers of all types. Club card is Tesco’s membership scheme which allows customers to save money on shopping by providing them price-off vouchers. Customers get a point on every pound they spend shopping at any stores of Tesco group of companies as well as at stores of their partner companies. Once a customer accumulates 150 points, these are then converted into Club card vouchers which enable the customer to save money on shopping. For getting a Tesco Club card customers have to register by filling in a form and sending it by post or they can also register online as well as over the phone. Anytime customers shop at Tesco, their club card is swiped. This means that the Club card acts as a tool for Tesco’s marketing department for collecting useful marketing data related to the buying habits of individual customers. Once the marketing department have observed the buying habit of customers, they then apply the information in their marketing strategies. For example, if more customers in Barking purchase pet food, then the marketing department will send vouchers to these customers to enable them buy more to increase sales. Besides as part of secondary research conducted by Tesco, then company makes use of government statistics to find information about the external environment. For example government statistics shows the current state of the economy such as inflation, recession etc. Tesco knowing what is going on in the economy can then make vital decisions on their pricing and other ways to promote their brands. For example, if the economy is in recession, Tesco will then embark on sales promotion to enable them sell more products to customers as well as reducing their prices to target more customers. Looking at the above advantage, it would be easy to draw a conclusion that government statistics are in fact very useful as a source of data for the marketing department of Tesco; however there are also important disadvantages to official statistics so care must be taken when using information from government statistics because they are not always produced in a useful form, making them harder for a Tesco to analyse and draw any trends and patterns from it. The information from the club card used by the Marketing department of Tesco can be described as unreliable because most customers have the view that the club card is a violation of rights and they do not comply. Besides, some customers who have registered for the club card do not even bring it along when they shop so it is sometimes difficult for the marketing department to make headway in determining which goods are selling and those which are not. My personal opinion is that the club card information on the Tesco database has actually helped Tesco to track the buying habits of 13 million British families. these buying habits has also in turn boasted Tesco’s relationship marketing as well as promoting customer loyalty in the business.
